Frenzy Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, 2008

Frenzy is a good name for this delightful New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc; that's what it creates for your senses. It's very young, and the color is almost as pale as tap water, but there is nothing watery or limpid about the smells and flavors--gooseberry, cat, green bell pepper, grapefruit and a twist of lime. Very fresh, very zesty and unmistakeably New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.

This wine is actually produced by an Italian firm, Tenuto Campo di Sasso of Tuscany, whose owners have become enamoured of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. They clearly bring to the table an appreciation for high acid, cool climate wines with zesty skins and peels character. It's not at all like a Sancerre or Pouilly Fume but has some of the lively character of an inexpensive generic Anjou Sauvignon Blanc. Frenzy is the second label for Mount Nelson, a wine you may have seen in wine stores or at Cost Plus World Market for around $15 a bottle.

D&W Markets in Michigan is offering Frenzy SB at a special case price of $95 over the next several weeks. The wine is young enough that I have no worry that it might lose some of its charm over the next several years. At less than $8 a bottle (or at $9.99, the regular price), this wine is worth every penny and more.

  1. Agree with your assessment of this fun, enjoyable wine. Frenzy Sauvignon Blanc is a crowd pleaser, a delight with simple salads or seafood, but is best suited as an aperitif that you can sip before dinner without getting loopy. The alcohol percentage is only 12.6%, so I don't feel like I need to take a nap before dinner. I had it with a very spicy (hot) burrito the other night and the acidity cleansed my palate perfectly. For New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, this wine is a steal.

  2. Thanks, "wine." One thing I like about Google is that it often introduces you to people who like the same wines you do. I appreciate your comment and hope you come back often.

  3. I agree...a tasty SB to enjoy on a hot summers day...and the price is about 1/2 of other SB's...and to be honest many don't offer the same enjoyment.

  4. I think one reason it's so enjoyable has to do with the 2008 vintage for NZ Sauvignon Blanc. I've been told this is a special vintage to seek out and buy.

Whatever the reason, it is a very enjoyable wine. I keep coming back to it again and again.

  5. New Zealand has been raising the economic matter. I think this country is one of the best in the area. The development has been doing a great work in the middle class and they're exciting about it. On the other hand, I think we need more examples like this one, to show (politically talking) the capacity around the world to fix their problems.
